Phrases

*Today, we will learn about phrases that one should use while agreeing or disagreeing with something.*
*آج، ہم ایسے مرکبات سیکھیں گے جنہیں کسی سے اتفاق یا عدم اتفاق کرتے وقت استعمال کیا جاتا ہے۔*

1. That's right!
ٹھیک ہے!

2. Definitely!
یقینا!

3. Exactly!
بالکل!

4. So do I
میں بھی ایسے ہی

5. No doubt about it.
اس بارے میں کوئی شک نہیں۔

6. We're in accord
ہمیں اتفاق ہے

7. Our thoughts are parallel
ہمارے خیالات مماثل ہیں

8. That's just what I was thinking.
میں بھی یہی سوچ رہا تھا۔

9. I could not have said it any better
میں اسے اور بہتر طور پر نہیں کہہ سکتا تھا

10. I think you are totally right about that.
میرے خیال میں آپ اس بارے میں بالکل درست ہیں۔

صحیح کہا آپ نے۔

یقینا!

2. I understand what you are saying, however...
میں آپ کی بات سمجھتا ہوں، تاہم۔۔۔

3. I see what you are saying, but..
میں آپ کی بات سمجھ مانتا ہوں، مگر۔۔۔

4. I am afraid, I don't agree...
مجھے خدشہ ہے، میں اتفاق نہیں کرتا ہوں۔۔۔

5. I'm sorry but, I just can't agree...
میں معذرت خواہ ہوں مگر، میں بس اتفاق نہیں کر سکتا ہوں۔۔۔

6. Sorry, but I really can't agree to that...
معذرت، مگر میں اس سے حقیقت میں اتفاق نہیں کر سکتا ہوں۔۔۔

7. Hmm.. I wonder if it's true that...
ہونہہ۔۔۔ میں سوچتا ہوں کہ آیا وہ سچ ہے۔۔۔

8. I don't think that's such a good idea...
میرے خیال میں وہ اتنا اچھا خیال نہیں ہے۔۔۔

*PUNCTUATION*

*Punctuation* (derived from the Latin punctum, a point) meas the right use of putting in points or stops in writing.

The following are the principal stops:

1) Full Stop or period ( . )
2) Comma ( , )
3) Colon  (  : )
4) Question Mark  ( ? )
5) Exclamation Mark ( ! )

Other marks in common use are the
★ Dash       ( _ )
★ Parentheses  ( )
★ Inverted Commas and Quotation Mark

1.
🔵 *#Full_Stop#*  ( . )
The full stop represents the greatest pause and separation. It is used to mark the end of a declarative or an Iimperative sentence; as,

▶ For Example :

★ Dear, patient, gentle,  Nell was dead.

The full stop can be used in abbreviations, but they are often omitted in modern style.

★ M.A or MA
★ M.P or MP
★ U.N.O or UNO

*#Comma#*
The comma represents the shortest pause, and is used:

1) To separate a series of words in the same construction; as,

▶ For Example:

★ England, France and Italy formed an alliance.

★ He lost lands, money, reputation and friends.

★ It was a long, dull and wearisome journey.
A Comma is generally not placed before the word preceded by and ; as,

2) To separate each pairs of words connected by and ; as,

▶ For Example:

★ We should be devout and humble,  cheerful and serene.

★ High and low, rich and poor, wise and foolish,  must all die.

3) After a Nominative absolute ; as,

★ This done, she returned to the old man with a lovely smile on her face.

★ The wind being favourable, the squadron sailed.

4) To mark off a Noun or phrase in Apposition ; as,

★ Paul, the apostle, was beheaded in the reign of Nero

★ Milton, the great English poet, was blind.
) To mark off words used in addressing people

★ Come into the garden, Maud

★ How are you, Mohan?

But when the words  are emphatic, we ought to use the note of Exclamation;  as,  
★ Monster ! By thee my child's devoured !

6)  To mark off two or more adverbs or adverbial phrases coming together ; as,

★ Then, at length , tardy justice was done to the memory of Oliver.

7) Before and after a participial phrase,  provided that the phrase might be expanded into a sentence, and is not used in a merely qualifying sense; as,

★ Caeser, having  conquered his enemies, returned to.  Rome.

8) Before and after words phrases or clauses, let into the body of a sentence; as,

★ it is mind, after all, which does the work of the world.

★ His behavior, to say the least, was very rude.

★ He didn't , however, gain his object.

9) To indicate the omission of a word, especially a verb ; as,

★ He will succeed ; you, never.

★He was a Brahmin ; She, a Rajput.) To separate short co-ordinate clauses of a compound sentence ; as,

★ I came, I saw, I conquered.

★ The way was long, the wind was cold.

★ Men may come  and men may go, but I go on forever.

Where there is a conjunction the comma is  sometimes omitted ; as,

★ He Came and saw me.

11) To mark off a direct quotation form the rest of the sentence;  as,

★ "Exactly so, " said Alice.

★ He said to his disciples, " Watch and pray".

★ "Go then, " said the ant, "and  dance winter away."

12) Before certain co-ordinate conjunctions ; as,

★ The act thus is t wisdom,  but folly.

13) To separate from the verb a long subject opening a sentence ; as,

★ The injustice of the sentence pronounced upon that great scientist and discoverer, is now evident to us all.

14) To separate a Noun clause- whether subject or object-preceding the verb ; as,

★ Whatever is, is right.

★How we are ever to get there, is the question.

15) To separate a clause that is not restrictive in meaning, but is co-ordinate with the principal clause; as,

★ Sailors, who are generally superstitious, say it is unlucky to embark on a Friday.

16) To separate an adverbial clause from its principal clause ; as,

★ When I was a bachelor, I lived by myself.

★ If thou would not be happy, seek to please.

*#Semicolon#*
The semicolon represents a pause of greater importance than that shown by the comma. It is used :

1) To separate the clauses of compound sentence, when they contain a comma; as,

★ He was a brave, large-hearted man, and we all honoured him.

2) To separate a series of loosely related causes; as,

★ Her court was pure ; her life serene;

★ God gave her peace ; her land reposed.

*#Colon#*  (  : )
The colon marks a still more complete pause than that expressed by the semi-colon. It is used ( Something with a dash after it)

1) To introduce a quotation ; as,

★ Bacon says : "Reading makes a full man, writing an exact man, speaking a ready man."

2) Before enumeration, example,  etc ; as,

★ The principal parts of a verb in English are  : the present tense, the past tense, and the past participle.

3) Between sentences grammatically independent but closely connected in sense;

★ Study to acquire a habit of thinking : no study is more important.

*#Question_Mark#*  ( ? )
The Question mark is used, instead of the full stop, after a direct question ; as,

★ Have you written your exercise?

★ If you prick us, do we not bleed?

★ And if you wrong us, shall we not have revenge?

★ If you trickle us, do we not laugh?

But Question Mark is not used after an indirect question ; as,

★ He asked me whether I had written my exercise.

6.
*#Exclamation_Mark#* ( ! )
The Exclamation mark is used after interjection and after phrases and sentences expressing sudden emotion or wish ; as,

★ Alas! Oh dear !

★ What a terrible fire this is!

★ O, what a fall was there, my countryman ! Long live the king !

When the interjection O is placed before the Nominative of Address, the Exclamation Mark, if employed at all, comes after the noun ; or it may be placed at the end of the sentence; as,

★ O father ! I hear the sound of guns.

★ O Hamlet, speak no more!

7.
*#Inverted_Commas#*  ( " " )
Inverted commas are used to enclose the exact words of a speaker,  or a quotation; as,

★ " I would rather die, " he exclaimed, " than join the oppressors of my country. "

★ Babar is said by Elphinstone to have been " the most admirable prince that ever reigned in Asia."

If a quotation occurs within a quotation, it is marked by single inverted Commas; as,

★ " You might as well say," added the March Hare, "that 'I like what I get is the same thing as I get what I like."

*#Dash#* ( _ )
The Dash is used:

1) To indicate an abrupt stop or change of thought ; as,

★ If my husband were alive_but why lament the past?

2) To resume a scattered subject; as,

★ Friends,  Companions, relatives_All deserved him.

9.
*#Hyphen#*
The Hyphen - a shorter line than the Dash - is used to connect the parts of a compound words ; as,

★ Passer-by
★ man-of-war
★ Jack-of-all-trades.

It is also used to connect parts of a word divided at the end of a line.

*#Parentheses#* (  )
Parentheses or Double Dashes are used to separate from the main parts of the sentence a phrase or clause which doesn't grammatically belong to it; as,

*#Apostrophe#* (  ' )
The Apostrophe is used:

1) To show the omission of a letter or letters; as,

★Don't,  e'er , I've.

2) In the Genitive Case of Nouns.

3) To form the plural of letters and figures.

★ Dot your i's and cross your t's.

★ Add two 5's and four 2's. Copied.

English Literary Term

English Literary Terms
1. Auto-Biography: -is the history of one’s life written by one self.
2. Act: - is the major division of a drama.
3. Antithesis: -is contrast or polarity in meaning.
4. Allusion: -is a reference to an idea, place, person or text existing outside the literary work.
5. Allegory: - is a literary work that has an implied meaning.
6. Alliteration:-the repetition of a consonant in two or more words.
7. Ballad: -is a song which tells a story.
8. Biography: -is the history of a person’s life by one else.
9. Blank Verse: -Verses written in iambic pentameter without any rhyme pattern are called blank verse.
10. Comedy:-is a play written to entertain its audience, ends happily.
11. Classical:-means any writing that conforms to the rules and modes of old Greek and Latin writings.
12. Canto:-is a sub-division of an epic or a narrative poem comparable to a chapter in a novel.
13. Chorus:-is a group of singers who stand alongside the stage in a drama.
14. Catharsis:-is emotional release of pity and fear that the tragic incidences in a tragedy arouse to an audience.
15. Comic relief:-a humorous scene in a tragedy to eliminate the tragic effect from audience.
16. Couplet:-To lines of the same material length usually found in Shakespearean sonnets.
17. Catastrophe:-Catastrophe is the downfall of the protagonist in a tragedy.
18. Didactic:-is a literary work which aims at teaching and instructing its readers.
19. Dirge:-is a short functional term.
20. Diction:-is the selection of words in literary work.
21. Dialect:-is the language of particular district; class or a group of people.
22. Drammatical Monologue:-In a poem when a single person speaks along with or without an audience is called drammatical monologue. Example “My last Duchess”-----Br
owning.
23. Difference between drama and novel:-A drama is meant to be performed whereas a novel is meant to be read.
24. Difference between stanza and paragraph:-A stanza contains verses whereas a paragraph contains prosaic lines.
25. Epic:-is a long narrative poem composed on a grand scale and is exalted style. Example “Paradise Lost”-------Milton.
26. Epilogue:-is the concluding part of a longer poem or a novel or a drama.
27. Fable:-is a brief story illustrating a moral.
28. Farce:-A form of low comedy designed to provoke laughter.
29. Foot:-A basic unit of meter.
30. Fiction:-A fiction is an imaginative narrative in prose e.g.
Lord of the fly—by Golding.
31. Elegy:- is a poem mourning to the death of an individual or a lament for a tragic event.
32. Genre:-means category or types of literature-epic, ode, ballad etc.
33. Hyperbole:-An overstatement or exaggeration.
34. Image:-is the mental picture connected with metaphor, smile and symbol.
35. Limerick:-is a short poem of a five-line stanza rhyming aaba.
36. Lyric:-A lyric is a short poem expressing a simple mood. It is usually personal and musical e.g. Keats’s odes.
37. Linguistic:-is the scientific and systematic study of language.
38. Melodrama:-A highly sensational drama with happy ending.
Example ‘The Spanish Tragedy’ –Kyd.
39. Metaphysical Poetry:-Meta means beyond and physical is related to body . . . . . . . . .
40. Mock-epic:-It is a long satirical poem dealing with a trivial theme. Example: “The rape of the lock”-Alexander Pope.
41. Metaphor:-A metaphor is an implicit comparison between two different things.
42. Metre:-The recurrence of similar stress pattern in some lines of a poem.
43. Novel:-is a long prose narrative fiction with plot, characters, etc.
44. Novelette:-is longer than a short story and shorter than a novel.
45. Ode:-is a long narrative poem of varying, line length dealing with serious subject matter.
46. Objectivity:-We have objectivity in a literary piece when the author focuses on an object from broadened point of view.
47. Octave:-is the firs part of Italian sonnet.
48. Oxymoron:-is apparently a physical contrast which oddly makes sense on a deeper level.
49. Prologue:-is the beginning part of a novel or a play or a novel.
50. Prose:-Any material that is not written in a regular meter like a poetry.
51. Prosody:-Prosody is the mechanics or grammar of verse.
52. Protagonist:-Protagonist is the main character in a literary work
53. Plot:-The arrangement of incidents is called plot.
54. Pun:-A pun is playing with words.
55. Periods of English literature:-The Anglo-Saxon, Middle English Renaissance, Restoration, Neoclassical Romantic,
Victorian, Modern, Post-Modern.
56. Romanticism:-was a literary movement. It stands Opposite to reason and focuses on emotion.
57. Rhetoric:-Rhetoric is the art of persuasive argument through writing.
58. Symbol:-A symbol is anything that stands for something else.
59. Sonnet:-is a lyric poem consisting of fourteen rhymed lines dealing with a lofty theme.
60. Satire:-is ridiculing the vices and follies of an individual or a society with a corrective design. E.g. “The rape of the lock”---Pope.
